What happened back in the day when Charles “Rusty” Goodman and Jimmie Davis got together? They wrote the snappy southern gospel song, ” I Wouldn’t Take Nothing For My Journey Now”. Both men were prolific songwriters, and both enjoyed very successful careers. Jimmie Davis was a singer, songwriter, actor, and politician that served two terms as the Governor of Louisiana. He is credited as the author of one of the most enduring songs of all time, “You Are My Sunshine”. Rusty Goodman sang along with his family in the Southern Gospel group, The Happy Goodmans. Rusty being the talent that he was, also had a solo career and recorded many southern gospel songs. Rusty has written of long list of gospel songs, some of which can be found on our website: “Home”, “Had It Not Been”, and “Who Am I?”
“I Wouldn’t Take Nothing For My Journey Now” chronicles the life of someone that starts out serving the Lord in their early days and continues on in the faith throughout their life. It tells of the opposition from the devil and how he offers things that are not as important as our relationship with the Lord. Jimmie Davis recorded the song first in 1965. The Happy Goodman’s used the song as they traveled the country singing their music, but they did not actually record it until much later. The tune is very catchy, and the song is easy to sing along with. This could be the reason that many of the biggest names in the field of Southern Gospel music have performed and recorded this song.
We hope you enjoy the Inspiration Quartet as they sing, “I Wouldn’t Take Nothing For My Journey Now”.
