“Amazing Grace” is one of the most well-known hymns, and it is said to be one of the most recognizable songs in the English World. It was written by John Newton in 1773 to illustrate a sermon. The Hymn has been loved by many for the message of redemption and forgiveness in spite of our sins. It debuted in print for the first time in 1779. It has been associated with numerous melodies in earlier days, but eventually became paired with a melody titled “New Britain” in 1835, which became the most widely known version of the song.
The stories of Newton’s experiences which eventually moved him to pen the song have been passed down through the years, describing his falling away from faith, far from professing Christianity until experiences moved him to ponder the mercy and power of God once again and eventually led him to write the lyrics of “Amazing Grace”.
It has been estimated that the song is performed about 10 million times annually, and has been recorded by many popular musical artists. It is also believed that the song has influenced a lot of Folk music throughout the years.
