I Am Determined To Follow Jesus – sing-along song – Junior Choir
This hymn is a slightly changed version of the original titled “I Have Decided To Follow Jesus” which was written by Sadhu Sundar Singh, an Indian Missionary, who had converted to Christianity at a young age.
It is said that the hymn was inspired by the last words declared by a man named Nokseng from Assam, India in the middle of the 19th Century.
The story of his experience has been passed down through the years. Supposedly Nokseng had turned to Christianity after being effected by the efforts of missionaries in his area. It was said that the chief of his village demanded that he renounce his faith. The story says that he responded with the words “I have decided to follow Jesus”.
This answer angered the village chief, so he threatened him again. This time Nokseng responded with the next line that says, “Though no one join me, still I will follow”. By this time the chief was extremely angry, and the again Nokseng answered the chief’s angry threats with the line, “The world behind me, the cross before me”.
The story says that this act of faith moved the chief and others in the village to convert and accept Christ as well, after witnessing how far he was willing to go for what he believed in.
While we cannot verify details of the story, we do know history shows us many examples of Christians being persecuted for the sake of Christ, who gave Himself for those who would truly follow Him.
Instead of singing “I Have Decided To Follow Jesus” we are singing “I Am Determined To Follow Jesus” as we face trials in our Christian walk, we must hold on to that determination to follow Him in spite of opposition. We hope the words are an encouragement to you. Please look for more hymns and inspirational songs on our website, as we will be adding more regularly!
